Kinetic Sculpture Parade of Recycled Creations to Mark Earth Day in Key West

On April 22, a human-powered Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade will take place in Key West to celebrate Earth Day. Spectators can expect to see colorful mobile sculptures crafted by local school groups, environmental supporters, and those who share the late artist Stanley Papio's passion for turning found objects into eclectic art. The parade will travel through Key West's historic downtown, commemorating Papio, a Key Largo folk artist famed for his renegade metal sculptures that incorporated recycled elements like car parts, appliances, pipes, and wire.

The parade will commence at noon outside the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, with creative recycling, offbeat art, and "people power" expected to entertain the whole family. Michael Gieda, the executive director of the Key West Art & Historical Society that presents the event, said, "Stanley Papio was doing upcycling before anybody knew what it was, and we encourage recycling and people to use found objects. Whether it's in the trash, the recycling bin or lying on the side of the road, it's all possible art".

Entries in past parades have included a gigantic red dragon with bubble wrap for scales, a 30-foot-long iguana with spines made from scrap cardboard, and a giant duck with recycled paper "feathers." This year, colorful, sculptural floats with moving parts, elaborately decorated bicycles, and other quirky mobile creations will travel the length of Key West's famous Duval Street, powered by human effort alone.

Co-produced by Wonderdog Studios, the parade will culminate with an awards ceremony and block party at Key West's Duval Street Pocket Park in the street's 1400 block beside the Atlantic Ocean. Cash prizes and awards await creators of the top kinetic sculpture floats and art bikes. For further inspiration, fans of renegade and recycled art can explore the "Stanley Papio: Junkyard Rebel" exhibit at Fort East Martello Museum, showing more than 100 of the artist's innovative creations, now widely recognized as culturally significant American artwork.

The parade is designed to inspire fans of eco-friendly repurposing and recycled art. It is an annual event that deviates from conventional parade norms to celebrate recycled art and environmental consciousness within the Key West community. This year promises to be as weird and wonderful as ever, with innovative and eye-catching recycled art expected to take centre stage.
