About Mac McAnally and His New Album, "Once in a Lifetime"
Mac McAnally is embarking on a musical journey like never before with his latest album, "Once in a Lifetime." In this exceptional collection of songs, McAnally showcases his remarkable ability to create music that transcends generations and musical genres.
The heart of this album lies in its simplicity, with McAnally arranging most of the material around his guitar and percussion. However, some tracks outgrew this minimalist approach, demonstrating the artist's versatility. With 12 songs spanning different decades and musical styles, what ties them all together is McAnally's unique perspective – an outlook he's carried from his humble beginnings as a shy kid from Mississippi to becoming one of Nashville's most respected singer-songwriters.
"I generally write whatever comes to me," McAnally explains. "I'm not somebody who sits down and says, 'I need to write a hit song,' or this or that kind of song. I just follow whatever floats through my head."
One of the standout tracks, "Alive and in Between," draws inspiration from McAnally's childhood memories of Belmont, Mississippi. These memories, sparked by Harrison Scott Key's memoir, "The World's Largest Man," evoke vivid snapshots from his youth. The song blends these images with a cool guitar riff McAnally has cherished for years, creating a heartfelt and nostalgic piece.
Another uplifting song on the album, "Almost All Good," showcases McAnally's resilience in the face of life's challenges. With Eric Darken's percussion adding a joyful rhythm to the track, McAnally's guitar and lyrics come alive in a harmonious blend. Notably, McAnally has earned ten Musician of the Year trophies from the Country Music Association, a testament to his musical prowess.
McAnally's live shows typically attract three types of fans: those who have followed his career since his 1977 debut album, those who recognize him as the guitarist in Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, and those who remember his notable contributions to country music. With "Once in a Lifetime," he caters to all of these fans, delivering a diverse range of songs that harken back to the quirky and quick-witted '70s era, reflecting the influence of musical icons like Jimmy Buffett, Randy Newman, and John Prine, who all became friends and mentors to McAnally.
The album also features collaborations with other artists, including Nashville singer-songwriter Drake White, who joins McAnally on the title track. This cheerful and uplifting song resonates with its message of embracing every day as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
One of McAnally's greatest gifts is his ability to turn conversations into songs, a talent that earned him a spot in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007. Several tracks on "Once in a Lifetime" reflect this gift, including "Good Guys Win," originally written for the 2006 film "Hoot," and "Brand New Broken Heart," a bluegrass-flavored tune from a 2007 demo session.
Additionally, McAnally revisits songs from earlier in his career, such as "Changing Channels," co-written and recorded by Jimmy Buffett in 1989. This timeless track has been a fan favorite for decades. McAnally also pays homage to The Beatles with his rendition of "Norwegian Wood," showcasing his sincere appreciation for their greatness.
"The Better Part of Living" and the album as a whole resonate with thoughtful lyrics and melodies. McAnally's music is a testament to his lifelong philosophy of making the most of every moment and striving to uplift others through his music.
