Discover the storied legacy of Key West at the historic Key West Cemetery, established in 1847 on Solares Hill—the highest natural elevation in the city—to safeguard against future flooding after the devastating hurricane of 1846. Spanning 19 picturesque acres, this sacred resting place honors an estimated 75,000 individuals, showcasing the rich cultural diversity that defines Key West today. Visitors can explore distinguished sections, including the historic Catholic and Jewish areas, the solemn USS Maine Plot dedicated in 1900, and the evocative Los Martires de Cuba memorial commemorating the heroes of the 1868 Cuban revolution. The Historic Florida Keys Foundation, in partnership with the City of Key West, offers engaging walking tours twice a week, guiding guests through notable gravesites such as Juana Borrero Pierra, William Curry, George Adderly, May Douglas, Hilda Russel, and the impressive USS Maine Monument. These 90-minute, one-mile tours provide an immersive experience into the island’s past, perfect for history enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike. Featured nationwide on PBS’s “Cemetery Special” in October 2005, the tours emphasize preservation and education, supported by donations of $20. Reservations are essential and can be made by emailing hfkf@bellsouth.net or calling 305-304-1453. Whether strolling among historic graves or honoring the heroes of Key West, the cemetery offers a unique and memorable journey through time, inviting all to appreciate the enduring spirit and heritage of this vibrant island community.
